Even though market cap is a widely used metric, it can sometimes be misleading. A good rule of thumb is that the usefulness of any given cryptocurrency’s market cap metric increases in proportion with the cryptocurrency’s trading volume spiritual meaning of losing a ring. If a cryptocurrency is actively traded and has deep liquidity across many different exchanges, it becomes much harder for single actors to manipulate prices and create an unrealistic market cap for the cryptocurrency.
Bitcoin’s price has skyrocketed as it’s become a household name. In May 2016, you could buy one bitcoin for about $US500. As of November 19, 2024 (seven months after the most recent bitcoin halving event occurred) a single bitcoin’s price was around $US90,520. That’s a growth of more than 18,000%.
Created in 2009 by Satoshi Nakamoto, bitcoin (BTC) is the original cryptocurrency. As with most cryptocurrencies, BTC runs on a decentralised blockchain technology, which is a ledger logging transactions distributed across a network of thousands of computers. Because additions to the distributed ledgers must be verified by solving a cryptographic puzzle, a process called proof of work, bitcoin is kept secure and safe from fraudsters.

Cryptocurrencies promise to make transferring funds directly between two parties easier without needing a trusted third party like a bank or a credit card company. Such decentralized transfers are secured by the use of public keys and private keys and different forms of incentive systems, such as proof of work or proof of stake.
Most cryptocurrencies are designed to gradually decrease the production of that currency, placing a cap on the total amount of that currency that will ever be in circulation. Compared with ordinary currencies held by financial institutions or kept as cash on hand, cryptocurrencies can be more difficult for seizure by law enforcement.
In February 2014, the world’s largest bitcoin exchange, Mt. Gox, declared bankruptcy. Likely due to theft, the company claimed that it had lost nearly 750,000 bitcoins belonging to their clients. This added up to approximately 7% of all bitcoins in existence, worth a total of $473 million. Mt. Gox blamed hackers, who had exploited the transaction malleability problems in the network. The price of a bitcoin fell from a high of about $1,160 in December to under $400 in February.
Although the original idea behind cryptocurrency was to create an alternative monetary asset, many investors purchase cryptocurrency not as money, but as an alternative asset or a way to invest in its underlying blockchain technology. Crypto is an emerging field, not unlike the technology sector in the 1990s. There are plenty of brilliant ideas in the crypto world, but not every blockchain innovation will find its way to mainstream use. So, if you’re planning on investing in cryptocurrencies, proceed with a healthy dose of caution.
However, to make cryptocurrencies part of the mainstream financial system, the negative aspects must be addressed, including market volatility, scams and hacks and regulatory uncertainties. Once these problems are fixed, cryptocurrencies have the potential to revolutionize the global financial landscape by offering innovative solutions for investment opportunities, payment methods and financial inclusion.
One of the conceits of cryptocurrencies is that anyone can mine them using a computer with an Internet connection. However, mining popular cryptocurrencies requires considerable energy, sometimes as much energy as entire countries consume. The expensive energy costs and the unpredictability of mining have concentrated mining among large firms whose revenues run into billions of dollars.

This followed the launch of ShibaSwap’s burn portal in April 2022, which rewarded users for burning SHIB with burntSHIB tokens. This burntSHIB is used to get RYOSHI tokens, which can also be staked on ShibaSwap.
SHIB does not have its own blockchain and therefore relies on Ethereum for its security since it is an ERC-20 token. Ethereum’s Ethash algorithm and vast network of miners provide ample safety to SHIB.
SHIB is a decentralized, community-led currency held by millions across the globe. Since its inception in late 2020, the Ethereum-based SHIB token has grown to become a worldwide phenomenon, and is now accepted as a form of payment at hundreds of locations, either directly or through third-party intermediaries.
In his blog RYOSHI RESEARCH, he characterizes himself as «just some guy of no consequence tapping at a keyboard.» Ryoshi said that usually in projects there are different roles like a CEO, a «tech guy,» and a roadmap, resulting in «someone plebs can bitch at.» He stresses that with Shiba, no one person is accountable or responsible and underlines that he owns 0 SHIB to this day. For this reason, Ryoshi can be «pure and unbiased,» getting satisfaction from Shiba «in other ways.»
Shiba Inu is a memecoin through and through. The term ‘memecoin’ originates with Dogecoin, which is named after a famous meme of a Shiba Inu dog. SHIB takes it a step further, naming itself after the breed itself.
